Want to Keep Students Engaged with Learning?
Our interactive panels make learning fun and hands-on, keeping students focused and active.

Teaching is not just about putting information in front of students. It is about engaging minds, igniting curiosity, sharpening skills, and fostering a love for learning.

You can achieve all these goals and enhance the learning experience by using the 5E Lesson Plan framework.

The dynamic stages of 5E  – Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, & Evaluate – can quickly transform the traditional classroom into an interactive learning space, providing quality education.

You are on the right page if you are a teacher or educator.

In this blog, we will understand how the 5E teaching framework works and how it can take your teaching game to the next level. We will also discuss the benefits of the 5E Model, along with examples.

By the end of this article, you will understand the What, Why, and How of the 5E lesson plan, improving your teaching.

What is the 5E Lesson Plan?

The 5E is an instructional model consisting of 5 stages – Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, & Evaluate. It was proposed by Dr. Rodger Bybee and developed by the Biological Sciences Curriculum Study (BSCS) in 1987.

It emphasizes student-centered learning, where students are encouraged to discover, question, and apply concepts through hands-on experiences. This 5E model can also work as one of the best classroom management strategies for teachers like you.

Initially, the 5E lesson plan was developed for science education only, but due to its effectiveness, it has become a prevalent model across all subjects

Understanding 5E Lesson Plan

1. Engage

This stage is all about hooking students with curiosity. Teachers connect new topics or concepts to students’ real-life experiences or prior knowledge. This stage aims to engage students rather than teach. Students should feel intrigued and motivated to learn more about the topic.

Let’s take an example: imagine you’re teaching the concept of photosynthesis. You can introduce the concept with interesting questions like “How do plants survive without eating food like humans?”

You can also show a time-lapse video of growing plants to make the lesson more exciting and enjoyable.

    2. Explore

At this stage of the 5E lesson plan framework, teachers allow students to learn more about the topic through hands-on activities. Teachers encourage the class to ask questions, perform experiments, and find answers on their own.

Here, teachers act as facilitators only, providing required tools and guidance without directly answering students’ questions.

Let’s try to understand this stage with our example of the photosynthesis lesson. Provide a set-up of leaves, plants, and sunlight for your students. Tell them to observe the changes in the plant over the next few days. They will surely start questioning everything they observe in the plant.

Questions like “Why is the leaf changing its position?” or “What role does sunlight play in these changes?” can come to their mind.

      3. Explain

This Explanation phase is nothing but the bridge between Engage & Explore stage. Here, teachers clarify concepts in detail and answer all students’ questions about the topic. Teachers explain the core concepts by using images and videos.

Questions and discussions are crucial to make this phase interactive. The main of this Explain stage is to help students understand how a particular concept applies to the real world.

To explain the photosynthesis concept in detail, you can show 3D images and videos on AI-powered Interactive panels such as SENSES. You can use animated diagrams to show how sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide convert into glucose and oxygen.

Also, on a 4K Ultra HD display of SENSES, you can easily highlight how plants store energy and let students ask questions during the explanation.

        4. Elaborate

Elaborate is one of the main stages of the 5E framework because this stage teaches the real-world application of concepts. This deepens understanding of concepts by encouraging problem-solving, critical thinking, and creativity. This phase reinforces learning as application solidifies understanding.

For example, you can ask your students to develop a small ecosystem in a jar with plants, soil, and water.

          5. Evaluate

This is the last stage of the 5E Model. Here, teachers assess students’ understanding and evaluate their progress, identifying areas where they may need support. Teachers provide detailed feedback to students, helping them realize their progress. Educators also award students with prizes to encourage students to keep working hard.

For the photosynthesis lesson, you can conduct a quick test or quiz with simple questions like – “Why is sunlight essential for photosynthesis?” You can also ask students to showcase and explain their mini-ecosystem.

Use interactive polling tools on the SENSES Smartboard to make the process engaging.

Understand the Benefits of the 5E Model Lesson Plan

5E Model Lesson Plan offers numerous benefits to both teachers and students. The 5E Model is a transformative teaching framework that promotes interactive, meaningful, and student-centered learning.

Similar to the SAMR model —which focuses on integrating technology into teaching to redefine learning experiences—the 5E Model brings structure and innovation to lesson planning, ensuring students are actively involved in every learning process.
